Annual exhibition brings together more than 50 artists in two downtown galleries
East End Arts Council’s annual summer exhibition, “DETOUR VII,” is continuing through August 22, offering two distinct exhibitions that explore the relationship between contemporary art, music and everyday objects.
Curated by Mary Boochever and Kevin Teare, the exhibition spans East End Arts Council’s two downtown Riverhead galleries and features work by more than 50 established and emerging artists working in painting, sculpture, photography, installation, mixed media and interdisciplinary practices.
Boochever curated “The Value of Nothing” at the 11 West Gallery at Peconic Crossing, 11 West Main Street, Riverhead. The exhibition examines how artists transform ordinary objects into works that challenge conventional ideas of value and meaning.
“The works in this exhibition approach the object in ways that challenge preconceived outcomes,” Boochever said in a statement. “Extrinsic and intrinsic value converge with the essence of the object, forming the foundation of the art on display.”
Featured artists include Barbara Dayton, Kurt Gumaer, Byron Kim, Abby Robinson, Christine Sciulli, David Sullivan and B. Wurtz.
At the Andy Tarshis Fine Art Gallery, 48 West Main Street, Riverhead, Teare presents “Open for the Stones Vol. 3,” the inaugural exhibition in the new gallery space. The exhibition is the third installment of Teare’s series highlighting visual artwork by musicians and artists with close ties to the music world.
“The historical connection between visual art and music is inescapable,” Teare said in a statement, adding that the exhibition is intended for “art lovers and music nerds alike.”
Participating artists include Steven Alexander, Bruce Anderson, Kathy Asheton, Ron Asheton, Julian Barratt, Nick Cash, Rosanne Cash, Jennifer Coates, Angel Corpus Christi, Mark Dagley, Jay Daugherty, Steve DiBenedetto, Graham Dolphin, Max Estenger, Kim Gordon, Tanya Haden, Lobyn Hamilton, Jack Hanley, Helen Hawley, Julia Heyward, Daniel Johnston, Clay Ketter, Michael Key, Bill Komoski, Richard Lloyd, Robert Longo, Servane Mary, Julia Murphy, Marianne Nowottny, Pat Place, Larry Poons, Cat Rebennack, Philip Rivlin, Dan Rizzie, Jamel Robinson, Kate Simon, Robert Singer, Caroline Snow, Simi Stone, Stuart Sutcliffe, Taro Suzuki, Martha Swetzoff, Kevin Teare, Sarah Jaffe Turnbull, Don Van Vliet, Alan Vega, Scott Warmuth, Emma Wasielke, Marnie Weber, Nick Weber and Almond Zigmund.
Presented across galleries directly opposite one another on West Main Street, “DETOUR VII” highlights the East End’s longstanding role as a gathering place for artists, musicians, writers and other creative figures. The exhibition brings together nationally and internationally recognized artists alongside those with deep ties to the region, encouraging dialogue across generations, disciplines and artistic practices.
Programming throughout the exhibition includes artist talks, curator-led tours, panel discussions and other special events. Admission and programming are free, thanks in part to funding from the Suffolk County Department of Economic Development and Planning. A portion of artwork sales benefits East End Arts Council and supports its exhibitions, arts education, artist opportunities, performances and community programming.
“DETOUR VII” remains on view through August 22. Gallery hours are noon to 5 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays. East End Arts Council is located at 11 West Main Street and 48 West Main Street in Riverhead. For more information, visit eastendarts.org or call 631-727-0900.
